South Korea's new "food labeling system" has been successfully developed

On February 18, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of South Korea announced that South Korea’s new “food labeling system” has been successfully developed, and the system will be implemented from March 14. Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus, economic situation become worse and handling of the current packaging materials and production costs become a burden, and the guidance period will be given until the end of this year. Foods produced or imported from existing packaging materials can be used before December 31 this year without prior notice to the competent authority. Hong Kong | Suspended imports of poultry meat and poultry products from parts of Finland, South Korea, Germany and Poland

The Food Safety Center (Center) of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on February 16 that in response to notifications from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock and Food of South Korea and the World Organisation for Animal Health, it refers to an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in Janakkala City, Tavastia Proper District, Finland, Jeju City, South Korea and Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, Bavaria, Germany, and a notification from the Polish Veterinary Inspection Service, referring to Lubusz Province, Poland with the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Żarski district, the center immediately instructed the industry to suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products (including poultry eggs) from the above areas to protect the public health of Hong Kong. A spokesperson for the center said that according to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 440 tonnes of frozen poultry from Finland last year; imported about 1,190 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry and about 1,115 poultry eggs from South Korea; about 3,900 metric tons of frozen poultry meat and about 1.41 million poultry eggs imported from Germany; and about 13,500 metric tons of frozen poultry meat and about 39.08 million poultry eggs. Spokesperson said: "The center has contacted the authorities in Finland, South Korea, Germany, and Poland regarding the incident, and will continue to closely monitor the news of the outbreak of avian influenza from the World Animal Health Organization and relevant authorities, and take appropriate actions in response to the development of the local epidemic." Hong Kong | CFS urges public not to consume sesame breadstick from Italy with possible presence of ethylene oxide

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department on February 9 urged the public not to consume a kind of sesame breadstick imported from Italy because the product concerned was found with a pesticide, ethylene oxide, which is not authorised by the European Union (EU). The trade should stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it. Details of the product are as follows: Product name: L'altro Pane Sfilatini Sesamo Brand: Casa Rinaldi Place of origin: Italy Net weight: 130 grams per pack importer: IL Bel Paese Limited Lot No.: L. 01002 Best-before date: October 2, 2021 A spokesman for the CFS said, "The CFS received a notification from the Rapid alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product was found with a substance, ethylene oxide, not authorised by the EU and is being recalled. According to the information provided by the RASFF, the affected product has been imported into Hong Kong. Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the local importer concerned for follow-up." A preliminary investigation found that the importer, IL Bel Paese Limited, had imported some of the affected product into Hong Kong. Since ethylene oxide is not authorised by the EU, for the sake of prudence, the importer has removed the product from shelves and stopped the sale of the affected product upon the CFS's advice and has initiated a recall. Enquiries about the recall can be made to the hotline of the importer at 2512 8070 during office hours. The spokesman urged consumers not to consume the affected product if they have bought any. The trade should also stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it. The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, continue to follow up and take appropriate action. An investigation is ongoing. Hong Kong | Import of poultry meat and products from Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine suspended

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on February 8 that in view of a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine, the CFS has instructed the trade to suspend the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from the above-mentioned area with immediate effect to protect public health in Hong Kong. A CFS spokesman said that according to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 2,300 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 69.96 million poultry eggs from Ukraine last year. "The CFS has contacted the Ukrainian authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE and the relevant authorities on the avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," the spokesman said.
