China’s tuna exports grow against the trend in 2020, especially in Spain and Thailand
According to statistics from China Customs, China exported 136,000 tons of tuna in 2020, an increase of 10% over the previous year, and the export value reached US$579 million, an increase of 15%. Especially in November, the export volume exceeded 16,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 52%.
Among them, about 30,000 tons of tuna fillet products were exported to the Spanish market, an increase of 27% over 2019 and an increase of 105% over 2017. Since the Sino-US trade war in 2018, Chinese tuna export companies have been forced to find new markets, successfully occupy a place in the EU, and continue to expand their market share. In 2020, China’s total exports of tuna to the United States fell to 3,300 tons, a decrease of 88% from 2018 (total exports to the United States in 2019 were about 4,300 tons).
In addition to Europe, Chinese manufacturers are also actively exploring other international markets. In 2020, China exported approximately 23,500 tons of tuna products to Thailand, an increase of 44% over the previous year and an increase of 368% over 2017. Thailand has therefore become China's second largest tuna export destination, second only to Spain.
