Brazil approves PHC279 to control Asian soybean rust: First product from PREtec Platform approved for sale in Brazil

Plant Health Care® (AIM: PHC.L), a leading provider of novel patent-protected biological products to global agriculture markets, announces its new seed treatment, PHC279, for the prevention and treatment of Asian soybean rust (ASR) has received federal approval for sale in Brazil. Highlights - PHC279 is the first product from Plant Health Care's PREtec technology platform ("Vaccines for Plants") approved for sale in Brazil, following $20m invested globally over the last eight years. - PHC279 has the potential to deliver disease control and yield increase worth approximately US$75/ha for Brazilian soybean growers, giving them an ROI of 6x or more, while reducing the use of potentially less safe agrochemicals. - PHC279's environmentally friendly profile and unique mode of action is expected to lead to wide adoption by Brazilian soybean growers. - The Company aims to launch PHC279 during the second half of 2021 and expects to build significant market penetration over the following 2-3 years; gross margins are expected to be comparable to those of current Harpin products. - PREtec peptides represent a novel class of technology which stimulate the plant to defend itself. Derived from natural proteins, PREtec is an environmentally friendly approach to protecting crops and is compatible with mainstream agricultural practices. - Brazil is the world's leading soybean producer with 38.6 million hectares (95.3 million acres) planted in the current season. ASR, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is a devastating disease with an estimated crop yield loss of up to 90%. Brazilian soybean farmers spent US$2 billion on fungicides during the 2016/2017 harvest for ASR control. Intensive use of traditional chemical fungicides has resulted in the reduction of efficacy of those products over time, highlighting the need for new, environmentally friendly products such as PHC279. The regulatory process in Brazil for agricultural products involves detailed review and approval by three government agencies. The Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) confirms that a product is effective; the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) checks for safety to humans in use and in food, while the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) confirms that products do not pose a threat to the environment. While the time required for registration of conventional pesticides can be six years or more, PHC279 passed through this process with approval from all three agencies in one year. This confirms the Brazilian government's commitment to promoting effective and environmentally friendly products. Chris Richards, CEO of Plant Health Care said, "PHC279 is the first of many products we plan to introduce in Brazil from the Company's PREtec platform. Achieving regulatory approval in Brazil in under 12 months is a strong endorsement of the sustainability credentials of PHC279. We anticipate launching PHC279 for use in the 2021/22 soybean season and the Company is advancing plans to secure distribution partners. Outside Brazil, we are preparing to launch this novel technology directly to markets in the U.S. and other countries, initially targeting markets with an opportunity of $5 billion." Japan's Marubeni Group believes that China's feed market has huge potential

From Intrafish on January 13, the production capacity of China's marine aquaculture industry has increased from 500,000 tons in 2003 to 1.5 million tons in 2019. This is the reason why Japan's Marubeni Group (Marubeni) has set up feed factories in China. Japan's Marubeni Group has established a good reputation in the feed industry in Japan and has seen better investment opportunities in the industry than in the domestic market. Therefore, it invested 850 million yen to set up a new feed factory in Tianjin. Japan’s Marubeni Group stated that China’s aquaculture production capacity is already 6.5 times that of Japan, and China’s demand for aquafeed is still increasing accordingly and is expected to expand further. Japan's Marubeni Group will operate its business in China through its 60%-owned subsidiary Marubeni Nisshin Feed (Marubeni Nisshin Feed). Marubeni Nisshin has started researching the Chinese aquatic feed market in 2015 and will improve it through contracted factories. Brand awareness and product reputation in the Chinese market. The U.S. releases the final revision of the lead and copper regulations in the National Level 1 Drinking Water Regulations

According to the U.S. Federal Register, on January 15, 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued Regulation No. 2020-28691, which determined the final revision of the lead and copper regulations in the National Level 1 Drinking Water Regulations. These revised requirements provide better and more effective protection for public health by reducing exposure to lead and copper in drinking water. The regulations will better identify high levels of lead, improve the reliability of lead tap sampling results, strengthen corrosion control processing requirements, expand consumer awareness and improve risk communication. For the first time, this final regulation requires community water systems to conduct drinking water lead detection and public education in schools and childcare facilities. In addition, the regulation will speed up the replacement of lead introduction pipelines by eliminating existing regulatory loopholes, promoting early action and strengthening replacement requirements. Marrone Bio's Grandevo® WDG bioinsecticide approved for use in New Zealand, Chile and on hemp in the U.S.

Marrone Bio Innovations (NASDAQ: MBII) (MBI), a global provider of bio-based crop protection and plant health products, Thursday announced that it recently received approval for Grandevo WDG Bioinsecticide for use in New Zealand and Chile. Grandevo WDG and Grandevo CG have also been approved for use on hemp by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “Growers are aggressively seeking alternative crop protection solutions that will serve as safe and effective controls for increasingly problematic pests,” said Kevin Hammill, Chief Commercial Officer of Marrone Bio Innovations. “After several years of extensive field trials in the U.S., we have witnessed the strong performance of how Grandevo WDG Bioinsecticide works on specialty crops. Now growers around the world will be able to experience the performance of Grandevo – from the high-value vineyards of New Zealand’s Marlborough region to Chile’s famous Colchagua Valley.” In New Zealand, Grandevo WDG will be sold by Nufarm as BioGro® and is approved for controlling mealybug on New Zealand’s famous wine grape crop. BioGro is registered and approved by Sustainable Winegrowing NZ™ (SWNZ), a world-leading sustainability program for growing wine grapes, and is allowed for use on both organic and conventional grape-growing systems from pre-flowering to bunch closure. Additional crops and pests are expected for approval in the coming year. Grandevo WDG was approved for use in blueberries, grapes, stone fruit, tomatoes, avocados, and onions by the Ministry of Agriculture in Chile (Servicio Agricola y Ganadero – SAG) in November 2020 and is distributed by Anasac, a leading Chilean agriculture inputs provider. Grandevo WDG was among one of the first products of its kind to be approved under SAG’s new regulatory guidance (No. 9074/2018) for biological pesticides, as published in December 2018. Chile is a major exporter of fresh blueberries and grapes and accounts for 60% of all fruit exports within South America. In the U.S., Grandevo WDG and Grandevo CG were recently approved by the EPA for use on hemp, a high-value crop that has seen rapid growth since its authorization for cultivation in the 2014 U.S. Farm Bill. The approval of the bioinsecticide will provide growers with some much-needed help in the management of problematic pests such as thrips and mites and comes at a time when, due to the highly regulated environment of hemp growing and processing, limited crop protection products have been available. Growers are encouraged to check with their state pesticide regulatory agency or MBI for registration status and can expect state approval in time for the planting of the 2021 hemp crop. Grandevo WDG is a microbial-based insecticide that contains several active compounds to repel, stop feeding, reduce reproduction, and induce mortality of damaging populations of sucking and chewing insects, flies and mites. Grandevo is ideal for integrated pest management (IPM) programs as it is soft on a wide range of beneficial insects including honeybees. The bioinsecticide is also Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) Exempt, requires minimal Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), has a 4-hour Re-Entry Interval (REI) and is approved for both organic and conventional production. US Revises Regulations on Meats Exported to China

On January 13, 2021, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (FSIS) issued Announcement CH-210 to amend the requirements for meat and meat products exported to China. Exporters are advised that importers must have a valid import license to allow entry of meat and poultry, and meat and poultry products. Exporters should work closely with their importer to assure that the proper licenses have been obtained. FSIS personnel do not need a copy of the permit license, and do not need to verify if there is a valid import license in order to issue export certificates. All export applications for meat and poultry exports must be entered and processed through PHIS beginning Monday January 27, 2020. PHIS will require the export applicant to enter the port of entry, slaughter establishment number, processing establishment number, and seal and container numbers before the application can be approved. U.S. facilities approved by FSIS for export to China must be listed on the GACC website before slaughtering and processing beef, pork, or poultry products for export to China. U.S. facilities can only export to China beef, pork, or poultry that are slaughtered and further processed after the facility has been added to the GACC website. Any establishment (i.e., slaughter, processing, cold storage) not currently listed on GACC’s eligible establishment list that is interested in exporting eligible beef, pork and poultry products to China must submit FSIS Form 9080-3 through PHIS. FSIS will provide GACC an updated establishment list monthly.
